Editorial Guidelines on the Use of Artificial Intelligence

At Müller Medien AG, the protection of personal data is a top priority. We apply artificial intelligence (AI) in our editorial work and are clearly committed to transparency and accountability. AI technologies help us streamline editorial workflows and accelerate content processing. However, ethical principles and journalistic standards remain at the heart of everything we do. We adhere to the guidelines of the Swiss Press Council and the professional codes of ethics governing journalism in Switzerland.

Principles for Using AI in Our Newsroom

AI as a Tool – Intellectual Ownership Remains Human
The Müller Medien AG publishing house does not allow full editorial texts to be written by artificial intelligence. Core journalistic tasks such as writing, structuring, researching, and evaluating are carried out by people. AI is used solely as a supporting tool. Intellectual property and copyright responsibility rest with our editors and journalists.

Transparency in AI-Generated Illustrations and Graphics
Any illustrations or graphics created using AI are clearly labelled as such, including details of the software used and the creator’s name.

No Labelling for Auxiliary Functions
When AI is used purely for internal support, such as research, idea generation or summarisation, no disclosure is required, as the final published text is fully edited and approved by editorial staff.

Data Protection and Confidentiality
Confidential documents, personal data, and information relating to sources or subscribers are never entered into AI systems, particularly not into cloud-based services. For transcribing interviews, we use a locally installed desktop programme that does not connect to external servers or cloud environments.

Critical Review and Editorial Responsibility
All AI-generated results are carefully reviewed and verified. The editorial team remains fully responsible for upholding journalistic standards and ensuring quality control.

Ongoing Training and Personal Responsibility
Our staff is continuously updated on new developments in AI. They use AI at their own discretion and always within the framework of these guidelines.
